Council Welcomes Investment in New Penarth Smart Gym Equipment
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has welcomed a £120,000 investment in new gym equipment at Penarth Leisure Centre by the Council’s leisure management partner Legacy Leisure.
The new state-of-the-art EGYM equipment is now fully operational, enhancing the facilities available to members and helping people of all fitness levels get more from their workouts.
The technology uses intelligent software and automated settings to deliver personalised strength and flexibility workouts, helping members exercise more effectively, track their progress and work towards their individual fitness goals.
The new equipment offers a range of features designed to make strength training more accessible, convenient and engaging. Members can use their new wristband to automatically configure machine settings, including seat positions and target weights, reducing the time spent setting up equipment and allowing them to focus on their workout.
Users can complete a guided, full-body strength circuit in approximately 20 to 30 minutes, with structured transitions between machines. Interactive screens provide real-time feedback on movement speed, range of motion and exercise technique, helping users maintain good form and stay motivated throughout their sessions.
The technology also monitors progress over time, using regular strength assessments to automatically adjust workout settings as users become stronger. More advanced training options offer additional opportunities for members to develop their strength using techniques that can be difficult to replicate on traditional gym equipment.
The investment supports the ongoing development of facilities at Penarth Leisure Centre, providing members with access to modern equipment and new ways to stay active. The technology is designed to cater for a wide range of users, from those beginning their fitness journey to more experienced gym-goers looking for a structured and progressive approach to training.
Cllr Gwyn John, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Well-being, said: “We are delighted to see this fantastic investment in Penarth Leisure Centre, which demonstrates our commitment with our partners to providing high-quality facilities that continue to support the health and wellbeing of our residents.
“Investing in modern gym equipment like EGYM will help make exercise more accessible, engaging and effective for people of all ages and fitness levels. By offering a more personalised approach to training, the new equipment can help residents build confidence, improve their fitness and maintain an active lifestyle, bringing real benefits to both physical and mental wellbeing.
“Leisure centres play an important role in supporting healthier communities, and we welcome this investment from Legacy Leisure, which will enhance the experience for existing members and encourage more people in Penarth to make the most of the facilities available to them.”
Rachel Bowden, Centre Manager at Penarth Leisure Centre for Legacy Leisure said: “We are absolutely thrilled to bring this £120,000 state-of-the-art EGYM investment to Penarth Leisure Centre. The upgrade brings world-class, intelligent fitness technology right to the doorstep of Penarth residents. Whether you are stepping into a gym for the very first time or are a seasoned athlete, the new EGYM equipment adapts completely to you.
“By removing the guesswork from strength training with automated setups and personalised tracking, this new smart equipment makes working out smoother, smarter, and more rewarding than ever.
“In just the first three weeks of launching, we have already onboarded over 1,000 people to the EGYM software, and all the kit has been used over 4,100 times. The feedback from our community has already been fantastic, and we can’t wait to welcome even more local residents through our doors to try it out.”
