Ysgol Y Deri Documentary returns
A documentary about the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s flagship school for pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALNs) is set to return for a third series.
Ysgol Y Deri: A Special School is back on BBC 1 Wales at 8pm on Monday following a screening premier at the school last week.
Episode two and three will air on December 9 and 16 respectively, with all instalments available on IPlayer from December 2.
The programme has been nominated for two BAFTA Cymru Awards and won a Royal Television Society Cymru prize in the comedy or entertainment category.
It offers viewers an insight into the inspirational work that goes on at Ysgol y Deri, the only school of its type in the Vale.
Cameras follow pupils’ individual stories and the dedicated staff who help them learn and achieve.
Critically acclaimed for the emotional, heart-warming tales it captures, A Special School proved just what a vital educational facility Ysgol y Deri is.
Cllr Rhiannon Birch, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Education, Arts and the Welsh Language, said: “Through the BBC’s fantastic documentary, we have all seen how crucial bespoke teaching and support is for pupils with special educational needs and the importance of providing all children in the County with the environment they need to flourish.
“The staff at Ysgol Y Deri carry out truly incredible
work and as a Local Authority we are extremely
grateful for those efforts.
“I can’t wait to tune in to watching the latest round of uplifting life-affirming stories.
“Seeing the work that takes place at the school, which is significantly oversubscribed, underlines the need for further provision and the reason we are building Ysgol Llyn Derw, a second site for the school on land near Cosmeston.”
Chris Britten, Ysgol Y Deri Headteacher, said: “It has been a pleasure to invite the cameras back in to celebrate the pupils, parents and especially the staff.
“You’ll catch up with some old characters and meet some new ones. I hope everyone enjoys this pre-Christmas treat!”
