Bathing Waters
There are six designated bathing waters in the Vale of Glamorgan, within the Shared Regulatory Services area.

The designated bathing waters are:
Water quality
Water quality in Wales is managed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW).
The bathing water season runs from 15 May to 30 September each year. During this period, NRW:
- collects water samples
- monitors water quality
- publishes results

Swimming outside designated areas
Swimming outside designated bathing waters is not recommended.
These areas:
- are not monitored for water quality
- may contain hazards such as strong currents, sudden changes in depth or submerged objects
- do not have safety supervision
If you choose to swim in these areas, you do so at your own risk.
Restricted and unsafe areas
Swimming is not allowed or unsafe in some locations due to known risks.
This includes:
- Cosmeston Lakes
- Rhoose Lagoons
- The Port of Barry
- Around Penarth Pier
Diving from Penarth Pier is also not permitted.
Swimming at Penarth Beach (away from the pier) is permitted within the designated bathing area.
Follow all safety signs and local guidance.
Water safety
Sea conditions can change quickly. You should:
- check weather and tide conditions before entering the water
- choose lifeguarded beaches where possible
- avoid swimming alone
- stay within your depth
- be aware of currents and changing conditions
In an emergency:
- float on your back to stay calm
- signal for help
- call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard
